Filip, Marjorie D.,
94, passed away very peacefully on December 5, 2013 surrounded by family. The daughter of the late John and Margaret Benko, she was born in New York City on October 13, 1919. Marge attended St Jean Baptiste High School and graduated suma cum laude from Hunter College. After college she worked in the Chancery Office of the Archdiocese of NY.
She married Lucien Filip on September 10, 1949. In 1960 they settled in White Plains, N.Y. and lived on Burling Avenue for many years where they raised seven children until Lou passed away in 2002. Marge continued to live on Burling Ave until 2008 when she moved into the Assisted Living Residence at Sunrise at Crestwood in Yonkers.
Marge was an active member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church for several decades. She enjoyed participating in the Mothers Club of Our Lady of Sorrows School, the St Agnes Women’s Guild, and the OLS Seniors Group. She worked at St. Bernard’s School as a secretary, and as the switchboard operator at Archbishop Stepinac High School. She also did volunteer work in the office at Our Lady of Sorrows Church. Marge and Lou were very active in their neighborhood where the annual “Block Party” was held on their front lawn for many years. Marge was known for her outstanding Macaroni and Cheese which was a favorite for family and friends. She was an avid shopper who could spend the day going from store to store but never buying a thing. Marge will be missed by her loving family and many friends.
Marge was predeceased by her daughter Regina in 1965, her husband Lou in 2002, and her sisters Annette Benko and Rosaline Holmok. She is survived by her daughters: Barbara Drouin and her husband Donald, Christina Clark and her husband Eric, Susan who spent many hours with her mother over the past year, and her sons: John, Robert and fiancé, Teresa Garofalo, and Peter and his wife Randi. Her grandchildren were very important to her: Jeff Drouin and wife Sarah, Brian Drouin,Matthew and Megan Clark, Lucien, Mark, and Catherine Filip, and Christopher and Julia Filip, and her great grandchildren, Charlie and Jack Drouin. She is also survived by her sister-in- law Eugenia Filipowski.
The family would like to thank her friends, especially Debbie Hurd, who spent so much time with her over the years. Also the staff at Sunrise at Crestwood who cared for her so well for five years, her aides Joy & Jennifer, and the staff at Greenwich Woods who cared for her these past 6 weeks.
Friends may call at the McMahon,Lyon & Hartnett Funeral Home in White Plains on Sunday, December 8 from 2pm – 6pm.
Funeral mass will be held Monday, December 9th at 10am at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in White Plains.
